A term used to described a result from stretching incorrectly. This is caused by forcing something like a taper that is to large into the fistula and causing the skin to get forced out of the inside of the fistula onto the outside of the lobe.
What is stretching? Stretching is the process of SLOWLY making a body part larger by slowly inserting larger items into the piercing. There are many different body piercings that can be stretched but the most common is the ear lobe. With each stretch you are making super tiny micro tears in the skin, which heal to become scar tissue. That is why you need to wait a decent amount of time in between stretching to ensure your ear heals.
What size should I start with? Do not skip sizes. Skipping sizes will just damage your ear and take longer to heal. This will also hurt and can cause problems in the future with stretching. Depending on what size jewellery you currently have in your ear, 14g (1.6mm) is a good starting point. Modify sells a large range of items for clients looking to start stretching.
If a store is suggesting you go straight to 8g (3mm) then there is a high chance that is the smallest size they can get in and just want to push a sale.
How long should I wait between stretching? Depending on the size and how large it is: These are MINIMUM times. The longer you wait in between stretching the better. This guide is for LOBE stretching. Other areas will have different stretching times.
Fresh piercing to first stretch: Approx 5 to 6 months minimum
It takes a MINIMUM of 6 weeks to heal the micro tears you create when stretching up to a new size. The larger the size, the longer you should wait. Modify often stocks in between sizes (7mm, 9mm ect) to help with stretching. DO NOT MISS SIZES.
Why does it hurt so much? Stretching should not be extremely painful, and if it does hurt, it should be no more than a dull pinch. If you are finding stretching is really painful, if it becomes overly swollen or you are bleeding, its more than likely that you have done something wrong.
We had a client who was told by a 'professional' that they could "stretch once the ear stopped hurting". So the client had been stretching every other day and came in wondering why his ears were angry, swollen and bleeding.
Should it be bleed? Stretching is essentially creating super super tiny micro tears that need to heal before re-stretching. Stretching your ears should not lead to bleeding. Bleeding means you have torn the skin, which usually means your lobes were not ready to stretch up. We suggest inserting the size down jewellery back in and wait for it to heal and then the added time frame above for your size.
Downsizing All you have to do to downsize your lobes is to insert a smaller size plug either 1-2mm sizes down from what you are at now. For a fresh stretch/ fresh blowout do not apply any oils or lotions to the area other than saline or sea salt soaks as fresh blowout is usually a open wound.
Fully removing the jewellry can also help and letting the ear heal from trauma. If you have established blowout, fully removing the jewellery for a week or two and doing lobe massages is the 1st step. Only apply oils and lotions to healed lobes or lobes with unbroken/ non irritated skin.
